I can remember as a young boy dreaming about changing the world. I said to myself, "I'll become a professional football player who is rich and famous." My fame and money could be used to start orphanages that cure childhood sadness.
That's it! I want to grow up and create the cure for childhood sadness because I hated being sad as a child.
So I began my campaign to rid the world of childhood sadness at 7 years old.
Fast forward forty-four years later. MY DREAM CAME TRUE!!!
But it didn't happen as I expected. The NFL thing didn't work out. Turns out they aren't looking for guys who had amazing talent in high school. Ha!
Here's how I became a world changer: I HEARD GOD SPEAK TO ME.
It all started when I asked God to give me the secret-sauce for changing the world. And He replied, "IF YOU WANT TO CHANGE THE WORLD THEN LEARN TO LOVE YOUR WIFE." OMG!
Your kidding me right. The secret to developing world changing power is learning to "love my wife." I thought I already was the most supportive, devoted husband on the planet.
I'm in the prime of my career, shooting to be a world-changer, and God wants me to stop focusing on helping the homeless, ending child abuse & neglect and establishing unity in the church to spend more effort loving me wife?
That's either just plain crazy or a word straight from Heaven!
My 40-plus years of world-changing efforts tells me that message came straight from the throne. Even though it wasn't what I expected or wanted to hear.
It's so easy to get tunnel vision for your cause. Trying to "change the world" is overwhelming. But at the end of the day, if you are stepping over the need right in front of your face to go fix global problems then you are missing the point.
The Lord was making it clear to me. There is no greater, more important need than learning to love the people in my house.
I am blessed to have spent 1000's of hours transforming lives all over the world for the last thirty-four years.
BUT NOTHING IS MORE REWARDING THAN LOVING MY WIFE AND MY KIDS! They put the purpose in my mission to change the world.
FINAL THOUGHT: I didn't become a famous, rich athlete who drew crowds of people to himself through amazing performances on Sunday afternoon.
But I HAVE CHANGED THE WORLD BECAUSE I LEARNED TO LOVE a little girl from Texas who in turn changed my life in the most excellent way.
MAYBE THE ANSWER TO THE WORLD'S PROBLEMS IS THAT ALL US LEARN TO LOVE THOSE THAT MATTER THE MOST TO US!!!
